ACE - Blessed
Author: Fred Lange
As a B-52H copilot at Grand Forks AFB (1977-81) I took maximum advantage of the T-38 ACE program. A story related from the on scene participants described the first cross country launched from GFAFB under the new program.
The pilots were required to brief the Squadron CC and Wing DO on the details of their flight planning - down to their AF Form 70s for each leg. All parties satisfied, off they went. The plan was to RON at Randolph and pay a visit to the Auger Inn.
Weather in Texas was anticipated to be challenging - after best efforts to circumnavigate thunderstorms, they put their focus on their alternate. Then ATC notified them they had a clear path for them to Randolph so they were back in the game.
As they arrived for approach (night) and landing so did heavy rain obscuring their visibility on touchdown. There was a period of disorientation as the aircraft hydroplaned and executed a 360 remaining on the runway but cocked off about 30 degrees. Assessing their status, they were pleased to find they remained on the paved surface and dodged a bullet.
Tower then called to inquire if Musky required assistance to which they replied "negative". As they pushed the throttles up to taxi in, they discovered the aircraft was hesitant to budge - as all 3 tires had blown.
After tow to the transient ramp, having received no requests to contact ATC or SAC authorities, they completed the 781 and headed to the Q. They figured they were screwed and would be hated for killing the ACE program in its infancy - authorities could locate them at the Auger Inn.
The next morning, having still not been confronted regarding the incident, they went to base ops and found their aircraft relocated to DV spot #2, several Red Xs entered and cleared - sporting three shiny new tires. Off they went for day 2, having dodged a serious career damaging bullet and a bit more respectful for the experience.
Both upgraded and were highly respected Aircraft Commanders.
