Laughlin Air Force Base
Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, has been training Air Force pilots since the early 1940s and remains one of the service’s busiest undergraduate pilot training bases. With its vast airspace and near-constant flying operations, Laughlin became synonymous with high-tempo, no-frills pilot production.
Life at Laughlin meant sunrise briefs, packed flight lines, and the constant rhythm of T-37s and later T-38s filling the sky. The pace was unforgiving, but the environment sharpened skills quickly. Students learned to manage pressure, trust their training, and rely on one another.
These are the stories from Laughlin—the moments of triumph and doubt, the instructors who left lasting marks, and the friendships built under the Texas sun that endured long after graduation.
